Effingham, NH Real Estate and Information . . .

Just a short ride from the larger lakes of both Maine & New HampshPine River State Forest, Effingham, NHire, and to the White Mountains, Effingham is central to the most popular destination areas, without all the traffic.  Effingham is a quaint New Hampshire community located on the Ossipee River, and a border town with the state of Maine.  Come trout fishing on the Pine River ... or explore nearby ponds and peat bogs, where you may be lucky enough to see creatures such as fisher or river otter.

The area is along Wilkinson Brook, a tributary to the Pine River that's just south of Green Mountain. Effingham is between Ossipee and the Maine border. Wilkinson Brook holds the state's largest wetland of its type, according to the New Hampshire Natural Heritage Bureau. This type of fen (a peat-accumulating wetland that receives mineral-rich groundwater) is also one of the best in the state and has several unique natural communities within it. The area has been documented as a conservation priority by the Natural Heritage Bureau and the Conservancy.Pine River has lots of easy paths for hiking and cross-country skiing.

Approximately two hours from Boston, Effingham is a great vacation getaway, particularly for canoeists and kayakers interested in the Ossipee River. The Pine River State Forest is one of the last remaining pine barrens in New Hampshire, and has many hiking and cross-country ski trails.  Forestry and fire continue to shape the landscape at Pine River, one of the last remaining pitch-pine forests in New Hampshire. Located in Effingham next to Ossippee, the Pine River pine barrens boast dry, sandy soil and a wealth of wildlife. It's not good for farmers, but it's awfully good for pine trees. Effingham was home to the first normal school in New Hampshire, established in 1830 on the second floor of the Effingham Union Academy Building, erected in 1819.  James W. Bradbury, later a U.S. Senator from Maine, took charge of the school only on condition that it should be for the "instruction and training of teachers." The idea was his own and, at that time, entirely novel.
